The 100 seat Planetarium first opened in May1990 in the renovated East Building. A modern Spitz Star Projector was installed along with the latestin planetarium audio/visual and laser equipment.  The Planetarium Department offers programs to both local schools and the general public.  Over 14,000 school children visit each year to see one of the 15 educational school programs.  6,000 people explore outer space each year during weekend offerings.  Several college credit courses utilize the multi-media aspects of the facility, as well as the three sections of Astronomy classes conducted each semester. The Planetarium Department also has an exhibit area and small gift shop for it's visitors.

Teacher workshops are also conducted in the use of Starlab, a portable planetarium and Project ASTRO.  Over 200 teachers have attended the weeklong Starlab workshops and now conduct planetarium lessons themselves at their schools. Project ASTRO matches professional astronomers with teachers in grades 3-9 and their students. Currently 43 astronomers work with 65 teachers and visit the same class 4-6 times to conduct hands-on astronomy activities.
