  Hello Student Leaders!

I call you a student leader because I truly believe that each and everyone of you can choose to be a leader in your own lives everyday as well as take on a leadership role as a member or officer in one of the many clubs/organizations we offer at RVCC.

I have worked in higher education at state, private, and religious affiliated colleges since 1995 and I am very passionate about leadership development and working with student to help them make the most of their college experience.

Alaysha M. Walker, Assistant Director

Hello Golden Lions!

My name is Alaysha Walker and I am the Assistant Director of Student Life and the advisor for the Program Board, the student led campus-wide events planning organization.  I am a NJ native, born and raised in Newark; however, I currently reside in Middlesex County with my son David and my two cats Sasha and Tiger.

I earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management and a Masters of Arts in Higher Education Administration.  My future educational goal would be to pursue a doctorates degree in Educational Policy, Law & Administration.  I also serve as an adjunct instructor for The College Experience course which is designed to help freshman students adjust to the college environment by learning time management skills, college study skills, excellent critical thinking techniques and most importantly how to network and navigate the resources available to them.

I have been working in higher education for over 15 years and love working with bright and talented young scholars.  My professional goal is to serve as a role model and mentor to our students.   I firmly believe in the old African proverb of “It Takes a Village to Raise a Child”.  My motto is to live by these words and to offer my knowledge, skills, abilities as well as resources and connections to assist any student who I come in contact with.  My ultimate goal is to empower all students, help them develop into future leaders and business professionals and to leave a legacy that inspires students from all walks of life to reach their greatest potential.

In my spare time, I enjoy being with my son, family & friends and also discovering new, at least to me, people, cultures and places.  I’m also a really good dancer and love to dance to almost all kinds of music especially music with a Caribbean or Latin flavor.

Marie

 Marie A. Wicklund, Department Assistant

My name is Marie Accardi-Wicklund and my family moved to Branchburg when I was 6 years old.  Our house was on Rt. 22 where the Wendy’s now stands and my father’s auto body business was next door where the Wells Fargo bank is located.  I have seen many changes in the Branchburg area and I remember when the property of RVCC was just farmland!

I graduated Somerville High School and then attended Somerset County Community College (now RVCC) for one semester way back in 1971.  At that time there was only one building to the College which is the Arts building now.  I soon met my husband, moved to Florida and didn’t return until 15 years later.  I just couldn’t stay away from Branchburg, NJ.  I worked at my father’s auto body shop, which by then ownership had been turned over to my older brother Joe, for 20 years as an office manager.

My brother sold the shop in 2007, and that is when I was lucky enough to become a part time employee at RVCC in the Student Life office.  I was impressed with and enjoyed the energy of the office and getting to know the students.  As the years go by I am delighted to watch students blossom into young adults eager to take on the world.  After they have graduated, it is wonderful to hear of their accomplishments when they return to visit our office.

Working at RVCC had enriched my life and it confirms to me that this is where I am supposed to be.  I hope that I make a difference in student’s lives, as they make a big difference in mine.
